2025 marked another year of progress for the Finance for Biodiversity community, with financial institutions continuing to advance their action on biodiversity.
Our Annual Report 2025 brings together highlights from across the Foundation’s work and new insights into the progress of our community.
The findings from our 2026 assessment survey, based on responses from 77 financial institutions on their 2025 performance, show that biodiversity is increasingly embedded across key areas of financial institutions’ activities:
- 92% have integrated biodiversity into their ESG policies
- 99% engage with companies and/or clients on biodiversity
- 95% have conducted a biodiversity impact assessment
- 86% have set biodiversity-related targets
The results also point to increasingly granular approaches to biodiversity assessment and growing attention to financing positive outcomes for nature. 40% of respondents use location-based biodiversity assessments, while 69% report allocating capital to activities and investments contributing to positive outcomes for nature.
As Anita de Horde, Executive Director of the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation, reflects:
“It is encouraging to see the progress financial institutions in our community are making; from increased granular, location-based assessments and stronger target setting to more capital being allocated towards positive outcomes for nature. But there is still a long way to go. We now need to build on this momentum, turn individual actions into more systematic change across portfolios, and significantly scale financial flows for nature.”
Looking ahead
The assessment highlights where further progress is needed, including moving towards more granular impact assessment, strengthening portfolio-level and impact targets, and developing more systematic strategies to increase financial flows towards positive outcomes for nature.
These findings will help inform the priorities of the FfB Foundation’s working groups, programmes and guidance, supporting financial institutions to address shared implementation challenges and accelerate action on biodiversity.
