FfB Foundation is inviting all financial institutions to take part in a Survey on nature finance strategies and capital allocation for positive biodiversity outcomes, launched at COP17. The survey will provide a 2026 baseline for a new Finance for Nature Positive (FfNP) programme and framework to help financial institutions identify, assess and prioritise nature-related strategies and opportunities that can contribute to the nature positive goal.
The Finance for Nature Positive (FfNP) programme (2026-2029) establishes a collaborative space for financial institutions to develop a Finance for Nature Positive framework and guidance. The programme is led by the @Finance for Biodiversity Foundation, in partnership with UNEP FI and WWF, and funded by the GEF Innovation Window-8.
Programme overview
The programme and framework will help financial institutions identify, assess, and prioritise financing and investment opportunities in both real economy players and countries that have the potential to contribute to the global nature positive goal of halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030 by delivering measurable positive outcomes for biodiversity.
Currently, financial institutions face significant barriers to scaling finance and investment towards supporting the global nature positive goal, including a lack of clear and harmonised frameworks, limited data and technical knowledge, and insufficient bankable opportunities. Addressing these gaps is essential to building financial institutions’ confidence and scaling capital mobilisation.
As CBD COP17 discussions will cover the monitoring indicators of the Global Biodiversity Framework, including the monitoring of private financial flows (Indicator D3), it is essential to build a better understanding of the private finance sector efforts to close the biodiversity finance gap, across asset classes, economic sectors, and geographies.
This assessment builds and expands on the results of the FfB Impact Report 2025, which identified strong appetite for nature positive outcomes in the community of FfB financial institutions. Taking stock of progress in resource mobilisation is an essential step to further unlock nature-related opportunities and lift barriers to private finance in positive biodiversity outcomes.
Survey Objectives
As part of the FfNP project, we are establishing a 2026 baseline to better understand financial institutions’ current appetite for strategies and opportunities that contribute to the nature positive goal, the main barriers they face in scaling up related financing and investment, and current levels and characteristics of capital allocation.
Responses to the survey will form the programme’s baseline. The same assessment will be repeated towards the end of the project to understand how these indicators have evolved over time and whether the project has contributed to increasing financial institutions’ appetite and capital mobilisation towards the nature positive goal, while helping to reduce the barriers identified.
Practical Information:
- We estimate the survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete.
- As a first round, the survey will run from 21 October 2026 to 21 November 2026.
- All survey responses will be treated as confidential and any data shared as a result of the survey responses will be aggregated and anonymised.
- If you have any questions, please reach out to info@financeforbiodiversity.org.
We encourage all financial institutions to participate in the Finance for Nature Positive Survey. The more responses we receive, the clearer and more accurate our understanding of the current baseline for finance for nature positive will be.
