On Finance Day at the UN Biodiversity Conference, CBD COP17, Finance for Biodiversity (FfB) Foundation welcomes ten new financial institutions into its community, representing €1.72 trillion in assets (under management). The new institutions — which include Emirates NBD, Fonds de Réserve pour les Retraites, Fremman Capital, Just Group plc, Ostrum Asset Management, Prince Bernhard Nature Fund, Printemps des Terres and Resilience Asset Management (IOM) Limited (the first from the Isle of Man) — join an ambitious community of 220 financial institutions across 31 countries committed to acting on nature loss and driving positive impact. The FfB community now represents nearly €27 trillion of combined assets.
The new institutions join the FfB community at an important moment for the global biodiversity agenda. COP17 sees the first Global Review of Collective Progress against the GBF, a critical milestone to track progress and assess the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). For the finance sector, it is an opportunity to take stock of progress and to work with the COP Parties on what is needed to establish the enabling environment needed to mobilise private finance and align financial flows with global biodiversity goals.
Anita de Horde, Executive Director and co-founder of the FfB Foundation, comments:
“Today we welcome ten new financial institutions into the FfB community, a proactive, ambitious global movement working to act on nature loss and drive positive impact. They join at an auspicious moment for biodiversity finance: COP17. It is vital that Parties use the findings of the Global Review to course correct towards the objectives of the GBF. Currently we are off track to meet them, and finance-related targets are some of the least progressed. Despite barriers, members of the FfB community are leading the way on nature, moving beyond commitment to action, demonstrating leadership through engaging with companies, assessing nature-related impacts and dependencies, setting targets to reduce negative and increase positive impacts, and strengtheningdisclosure.”
Turning shared knowledge into action
There are several ways in which financial institutions can join the FfB community. Emirates NBD and Ostrum Asset Management join as both Pledge Signatories and FfB Foundation Members. Fremman Capital, Prince Bernhard Nature Fund, Printemps des Terres and Resilience Asset Management (IOM) Limited also commit to nature by signing the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge. Fonds de Réserve pour les Retraites, and Just Group plc join FfB Foundation as Hub Participants.
Joining the FfB Hub or becoming an FfB Member provides institutions with access to a wealth of practical knowledge, resources, workshops and peer exchange. As financial institutions navigate how biodiversity-related risks, dependencies, impacts and opportunities translate into their activities, the ability to learn from peers and share experience is increasingly important in turning commitments into practical action.

FfB Foundation at COP17
FfB Foundation is leading a CBD COP17 delegation of 40 representatives from 18 financial institutions. We are calling on governments to develop a set of finance-oriented, actionable priorities as part of the GBF Global Review to guide the financial system transformation necessary for the urgent alignment of financial flows with global biodiversity goals. FfB Foundation has been involved in CBD negotiations since the development of the GBF, calling for the alignment of financial flows with the GBF in Goal D and Target 14, amongst other contributions.
At COP17, FfB Foundation is part of the Finance Day Steering Group for the 3rd edition and an Observer of the UN Cali Fund Steering Committee. As an observer and lead partner of the CBD on Finance Sector mobilisation, FfB Foundation represents financial institutions in COP17 negotiations and has input directly into text discussions.
Together with FAIRR, FfB Foundation is co-hosting the Finance Area, while leading and contributing to events on topics including nature-positive finance, investor action and biodiversity finance solutions.
