Paul is Head of Expeditions for National Geographic Pristine Seas, which has completed 47 global expeditions to protect over 6.6 million square kilometres of ocean. A broadcaster, published author and journalist, Paul has presented 22 BBC television programs on current affairs, science and the environment, including award-winning Oceans, Britain’s Secret Seas, Voyages of Discovery, Frank Wild and Meltdown. He spent a decade as Base Commander of Rothera Research Station, Antarctica, for the British Antarctic Survey. For this he was awarded the Queen’s Polar Medal and for his Antarctic work with NASA, the US Polar Medal. He is a former vice president of the Royal Geographical Society, which awarded him its Founder’s Medal and Ness Award. He is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Cumbria, and an Honorary Doctor of Science at Plymouth University. A mountain has been named after him in Antarctica.
