Nordea Asset Management one of the 9 new signatories of the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge

84 signatories represent in total over €12.6 trillion in assets and 18 countries

30 November 2021 – Nordea Asset Management is one of the 9 new financial institutions that signed the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge. The new signatories will be welcomed by Bianca Tetteroo (CEO of Achmea) on behalf of the current Pledge signatories during the High-Level Closing Plenary of the European Business & Nature Summit (EBNS) on 1 December 11.45-13.00 CET. Nils Bolmstrand, CEO of new signatory Nordea Asset Management, will give a speech on their biodiversity ambitions.

Bolmstrand: “At Nordea Asset Management, we recognize our role and our duty to protect, respect and take responsibility for our impact on global biodiversity and to contribute to a nature-positive economy. We support the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge’s mission to address nature-related financial risks and opportunities, to engage with corporates having the biggest biodiversity-related impact and to channel capital flows towards nature-positive outcomes.”

3 new pension funds
Among the 9 new signatories, we welcome 3 new pension funds: KLP, PensionDanmark and ERAFP. In total, four pension funds have signed the Pledge. We therefore would like to encourage other pension funds to commit to the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge too.

Finance for Biodiversity Pledge
The Finance for Biodiversity Pledge is a commitment of financial institutions to protect and restore biodiversity through their finance activities and investments. The Pledge consists of 5 steps financial institutions promise to take:

  1. Collaborating and sharing knowledge
  2. Engaging with companies
  3. Assessing impact
  4. Setting targets
  5. Reporting publicly on the above before 2025

As financial institutions, they emphasize the need to protect biodiversity and to reverse nature loss in this decade, ahead of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2021.

Working groups
Financial institutions that signed the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge can become members to join the working groups of the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation. With this new round of signatories, the total number of members increased from 38 to 41. The members are sharing knowledge and collaborating on topics such as impact assessment, engaging with companies and public policy advocacy. Additional working groups on positive impact and target setting will follow next year.

EBNS
The European Business & Nature Summit (EBNS) is a high-level political and technical forum facilitating dialogue between business leaders and policymakers. It will take place on 30 November and 1 December. The event is initiated by the EU Business and Biodiversity Platform of the European Commission and organised in cooperation with partner organisations. It targets businesses, financial institutions, and representatives of the public sector, as well as academics and NGOs interested in business action for biodiversity.

New signatory round in the new year
There will be another round of signatories next year. More information about the date and deadline will follow. Financial institutions can already sign up via our registration page here.
