More information on World Biodiversity Day

The United Nations has proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), or World Biodiversity Day, to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on on Biological Diversity at the Nairobi Conference on 22 May 1992.

Although every World Biodiversity Day carries with it its own special significance, this year’s global celebrations bring a renewed sense of hope, thanks to the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. To mark this achievement, the theme of 2023, “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity”, reflects both the nature of what was achieved at COP 15, as well as the urgency of what still needs to be done in terms of implementation. Parties and relevant organisations are encouraged to share information regarding their commitments to achieve the targets of the framework and the actions they have already taken to implement them.

Why get involved in the FfB Foundation as a financial institution?

With the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15 in December 2022, it becomes clear that not only countries but also financial institutions have a responsibility to meet the overall goal of reversing nature loss by 2030. For more information, please refer to a recently published report here

Together with the 126 other financial institution signatories of the FfB Pledge, you can commit to protecting and restoring biodiversity through your finance activities and investments. As an FfB Pledge signatory, you can show that your organisation is acting to protect nature.

Besides signing the FfB Pledge, you can also become a member of the FfB Foundation and learn more about biodiversity together with your peers. Via online working group meetings, you will get information on the FfB Pledge commitments, share best practices, create collaborative actions and increase your biodiversity network and knowledge.

How to join the FfB Pledge and Foundation?

The deadline for signing up for this signatory round is 10 May.

Please check our information package to learn more about the membership options we offer and use our application form if you have decided to become a member. Feel free to e-mail us at info@financeforbiodiversity.org if you have any questions.
